The Women’s Olympic Time Trial 2012. Walton on Thames, Surrey

As well as the road race, I was lucky enough to have the Men & Women’s Olympic Time Trial courses come within a few miles of where I live.

As you can imagine with the spotlight on Bradley Wiggins, the crowds were always going to be as big as the Road Race, if not bigger. Even with arriving well before the Women’s time trial the prime spots were all taken so I had to be a bit creative. Not wanting to do the standard square-on shots, I thought I’d go to the inside of the track near a bend. The aim was to get riders cornering or at least at a slight angle.

The beauty of the time trial is that you have a few chances at getting the shot. As a result I was able to change lens from a 12-24mm to a 24-105mm after I’d got a few shots exploring the wide-angle distortion. I also used fill-in flash on some of the shots as I was shooting into the strong sunlight.

The balance was trying to capture these very fast-moving cyclists without having static images, shot at 1000/sec. To me they don’t convey the feeling, so I slowed down the shutter speed to try to get a bit of movement.

Anyway here are a few shots I took of the women’s Time Trial.

The Women’s Olympic Road Race 2012. West Byfleet, Surrey

I was lucky enough to have the Men & Women’s Olympic Road Race and Time Trials come within a few miles of where I live.

Here are a few shots I took of the women’s road race. The rain stopped just in time for the peloton to pass through. Considering the timeframe to get some good images (not long as they were moving!), I’m quite pleased with the results.

The Men’s Olympic Road Race 2012 Passes through West Byfleet, Surrey

I was lucky enough to have the Men & Women’s Olympic Road Race and Time Trials come within a few miles of where I live.

So having watched the Tour and other big races (remember the Milk Race?) since the 1980’s, it was too big an opportunity to miss.

As a result the next few posts will just be a few photos from each race. Each event seemed to gel the local community and the police where doing their bit posing for photos and “high fiving” the kids as the passed by.

It was great to see the elite of cycling pretty much pass the end of your road!

The National Trust at Box Hill are apparently being quite relaxed about Tour-style graffiti on the race routes  for this weekends road races. Which makes a refreshing change. I feel it’ll really add to the atmosphere. Now I’m not saying we can transform Box Hill into Alpe d’Huez but it’ll give it that big race feel. Well done to the National Trust. Sadly this is after one of the Olympic committees painted over this brilliant piece my Mau Mau.

I personally think it sums the modern Olympics up perfectly… maybe holding up a mirror to the misappropriation of the Olympic ideal was too real for them!

Heineken’s Soccer Swindle – Guerrilla Marketing, Great Idea, Brilliant Execution

This is one of the best Guerrilla Marketing campaigns of recent times by  JWT – Italy.

Heineken staged a fake classical music concert at the same time of a crucial Real Madrid vs. AC Milan game on October 21st, there was no chance that any real soccer fan would be there…but after severe pressure from girlfriends, professors and bosses the unfortunate victims trudged into the concert.

What happens next is quality and beautifully links the concert and the match. Suffice to say that over 1100 soccer fans got swindled, 1.5 million people saw their reactions on live TV, and Heineken received 5 million visitors to the site devoted to the event, and a great deal of news coverage for their troubles.
